A Look at Red Lake Fishing

Fishing for sport and food has been an endeavor in the United States that can be traced back for centuries. Disciples of fishing have seemingly forever pursued the ideal location for hauling in the biggest and most bountiful catch. Red Lake fishing has proven to be a big draw to anglers looking for a spot to land some really tasty fish while surrounded by splendid scenery.

Red Lake fishing can be found in Beltrami County in the northern portion of Minnesota. Notably, it is the largest freshwater lake that falls entirely within the state. Its surface area stretches for almost four hundred and fifty square miles. A peninsula starting from the east practically bisects the lake into two equal parts. These are called Upper Red Lake and Lower Red Lake.

As mentioned, some of the best eating fish can found here. The most sought after in all of Minnesota is the walleye. The average annual haul in Minnesota of walleye by fishermen is three and one half million fish, totaling almost four million pounds. It is prized by anglers not just for its delicious taste but also because the walleye can prove to be a challenging and elusive catch.

Walleyes are not the only popular breeds of fish sought by sportsmen in this lake. One of the most voracious predators in the lake, but also one of the easiest to catch, is the northern pike. Its voracious nature finds it to be overwhelmingly tempting to strike at and devour lures and bait. Some people swear that the northern pike tastes as good, if not better, than a walleye. The average size of a northern is two to three pounds, though trophies have been awarded to anglers for catching pikes that have weighed in at over twenty pounds.

Some other species of fish commonly caught in this lake are the black crappie, the white crappie, the yellow perch, the white sucker, and the lake whitefish. The crappies have the distinction of being the fish most often reeled in by fishermen, with the giant black crappie being the most valued.

Walleye, sauger (a close cousin to the walleye) and northern pike season typically runs from the beginning of May until the end of February. Ice fishing for black crappie is very popular during the winter months, although the best time to catch them is during the spring months as this is when they are engaged in their spawning runs.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) publishes an annual list of fishing tournaments throughout the state. Typically four hundred to six hundred permits a year are granted by the DNR to sponsors of the tourneys. Many are held at Red Lake. Entrant fees can run as low as thirty dollars, while some prizes for the contestants can reach into the tens of thousands of dollars.

Red Lake fishing has and will continue to be one of the most popular fishing spots in Minnesota, if not in the United States. Its diversity of delicious fish makes it the perfect enticement for fishermen.
