Lake Ontario is one out of five of the Great Lakes of North America, lying between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U. S. State of New York. Even though it happens to be the smallest one of the Great Lakes, Lake Ontario fishing is considered to be some of the best anywhere in the world.

Being the smallest Great Lake does not mean that it is tiny. It is still the 14th largest of all the lakes around the world at 193 miles long and 53 miles wide. It has a shoreline that stretches over 700 miles. There is plenty of room for any avid fisherman to stretch out and find a suitable spot for some fantastic fishing action. This body of water is famous for holding more than just a few top salmon and trout fishing records to be found in any fishing book.

Fishing in this lake is a year round affair with angling activities that range from ice fishing in winter months to the heavy catching late summer salmon runs. It is often said that there is never a bad time to be fishing here, although there are certain times around the year that will tend to bring the really big crowds for the most popular fish that can be found lurking about the lake.

Lake Ontario fishing is the place to find the largest concentrations of brown trout anywhere on this planet. Anglers particularly are drawn in April to find the the brown trout when they move into the shallows. During the early spring, spawning bait fish gather here and there are plenty of big fish that are more than ready and willing to swarm in to eat them. You can also find massive schools of steel heads working the shallow waters of the lake this time of year.

Since a lot of species of fish are going to be mostly dormant through the winter months, they will immediately want to start feeding voraciously as soon as the water begins warm up in spring. Even though the trout are always the biggest attraction here, the great abundance of walleyes, bass and panfish are a usually a good enough reason for anglers to come back year after year. Thousands of outdoorsmen make an annual tradition out of Lake Ontario spring fishing. In addition to the trout, there are musky, perch and salmon filling the waters.

Beginning in early June and running through August, people flock here to get their hooks into the popular King Salmon. Come early spring, these fish will usually range anywhere from a still respectable 10 to 15 pounds. However, during summer and fall months they become monsters that are commonly over 40 pounds of rod bending, line breaking fish.

In September they begin their annual spawning runs and some fisherman, possibly exaggerating, claim you can walk across the Genesee River on their backs.

For anybody who has the impulse to attempt to catch the big ones, and plenty of them, Lake Ontario fishing is always a satisfying experience that keeps anglers returning time after time.
