Lake Fork Fishing Is The Best Place To Find Largemouth Bass

On the northern edge of the state of Texas in Wood County near the small city of Quitman you will find a well known lake for bass fishing. Visitors come to this relaxing area to get away from the hustle and bustle of big city life. Lake Fork fishing is something you should experience if you enjoy the outdoors.

Largemouth Bass are most comfortable in water temperatures of 65 to 75 degrees. Finding the best time to come to the lake for successful fishing would depend on the seasons. If you come during the summer months, day fishing will not be very exciting. The fish will be deeper to stay cooler. You can fish during the night and probably have some luck.

Spawning season is during the spring months. The females will have laid their eggs and will be searching for food in the shallower waters. They are also active after it rains because the rain brings new nutrients into the water that they need. Anytime the waters are at their favorite temperatures they will go into feeding frenzies and can be easy found in shallower waters.

Between 1979 and 1987 the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department established this lake stocking it with over 700,000 Florida Black Bass. Needless to say this lake is famous for its Largemouth Bass. There are other species of fish that reside in these waters. There are Bluegills, Black Crappies, White Crappies, Channel Catfish and Flathead Catfish who share the lake with the bass. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to the area each year to try their luck catching the big bass.

The best time to fish for the Largemouth Bass is during the spring, fall and winter months. The winter months are the best for the Crappies and the summer months for the Bluegills. Fishing at the lake is sure to be successful any time of the year, it just depends on what you want to fish for.

The Legend of Lake Fork is a 3 day event held every year in May. This year the winners can go home with prizes and cash awards totaling $237,000. Cash prizes are given to the biggest fish by weight. They must also be at least 24 inches or more in length. The winning bass in 2009’s event was 13.11 pounds. Due to the success of last year’s tournament they decided to add an extra day to the schedule.

During various days in February through May the Lake Fork Team Trail Tournament is held here. Each team consists of two people for the five different days. They are allowed to bring back 4 photo fish and or one 24 inch fish per team member. The pot for first place is $500.

The first World Championship Bass Fly Fishing Tournament will be held this year. The month of May has been the chosen month to conduct this event. Fishing is not limited to a boat. You can also use a float tube, pontoon or from the shoreline. Twelve hundred dollars is the purse for first place.
