Lake Fork Fishing

Lake Fork Fishing is located near the small city of Quitman, Texas on the northern edge of the state in Wood County. This quaint city is a relaxing escape for many trying to get away from the big city for awhile. Lake Fork Fishing is famous in this area.

If you’re planning a fishing trip to this lake and want to know when the best time to go is, here are some things to consider. This is trophy bass country and bass like to stay in the water temperature between 65 and 75 degrees. If it is too hot they are going to go deeper making it harder for you to catch them. During the summer fishing at night or on a cloudy day would be most favorable.

During the spring months they are spawning and move to the shallow water. The fall season enables the waters to reach the fishes favorite temperature causing they go into a feeding frenzy in the shallows. Rainy days also get them searching for food near the surface.

Lake Fork fishing is mainly known for its Largemouth Bass however there are other varieties of fish residing within the lake as well. There are Bluegill and a couple different species of Crappies and Catfish. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department established this lake and stocked it with over seven hundred thousand Florida Black Bass between 1979 and 1987. Each year around three hundred thousand visitors come here to fish for the big bass.

Largemouth Bass are readily available during the spring, fall and winter months. Crappie fishing is best during winter months near the dam. Bluegills are prominent during the early summer. You can certainly fulfill your fishing dreams here during almost any season.

Every May they host the Legend of Lake Fork tournament for three days. The prizes and cash amount to $237,000. The prizes are for heaviest fish caught with a length of two feet or more. In 2009’s tournament the winning bass weighed in at 13.11 pounds. Last year this was only a two day event but due to its success it will be a three day event in 2010.

The Lake Fork Team Trail tournament is held for five different days during the months of February through May. The first place prize is $500. There are two participants to a team for this five day series. Each team is allowed four photo fish and or a two foot fish per contestant.

This year it will host the first World Championship Bass Fly Fishing Tournament. It will be held in May. First place prize will be $1200. Fishing may be from a boat, float tube, pontoon or the bank. Only rods, reels and flies made exclusively for fly fishing are allowed.

The guides that assist visitors with Lake Fork fishing are unique. They are professional and personable making everyone feel like they got their money’s worth. They know the patterns of the fish and make each trip a successful catch for novice anglers. They are knowledgeable fishermen and share information on bait, boats and techniques.
