Kentucky Lake Fishing

Kentucky is the home to two of the biggest lakes in the US and where there is water, you will find water sports. One of the favorite of these sports is Kentucky lake fishing, but surrounded by a 170 000 acre recreation area, there is a lot more going on, of this you can be guaranteed.

The Kentucky lakes National recreation area offers a ton of fun filled activities that will satisfy the outdoorsman in everyone. As well as hiking, fishing and camping there are water park adventures, go-karting, wild life spotting, boating, tubing, skiing, and lots more activities.

There are nine reservoirs on the Tennessee River and Kentucky Lake is the lowest of these. It was formed when the Kentucky dam was completed in 1944 and backs up the river to about the equivalent of 155,339 football fields in water acreage; that is about 184 miles. The second of these two great lakes is Lake Barkley and this was build in the 1950’s by the US Army Engineers Corps. The lakes are connected by a navigable canal.

Recreation, including fishing takes place all year round and during the winter this is a brilliant spot for eagle watching as well as bird spotting as many migratory birds held this way. It is also a popular place and season for duck and geese hunters.

Late in the winter anglers start fishing for crappie and this season lasts well into May. These fish move around but find there way back to the shallows by April which is when Black Bass season starts. Black Bass trophy fishing is a remarkably popular activity and sees anglers getting some fantastic top water and off the embankment fishing during late summer.

Kentucky lake fishing is also home to panfish which is a more relaxing sport and catching bluegill is also popular. Stretch the line a little more with some fighting redear and other shell crackers, and guides are available to take you to the best fishing hot spots.

Kentucky lake fishing is the home to some top tournaments because of the huge bass populations and this includes the FLW series, the Bassmaster Elite Series, the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League and the Stren Series. Although not as popular at the big bass tournaments, the crappies are not to be outdone and they have their fair share of tournaments also.

Because these lakes are the home to some of the best US crappie fishing, both the Crappie Masters and the Crappie USA tournament, visit the lakes. Kentucky lake fishing is also home to fish on a larger scale and we find flathead, channel and blue catfish, white, yellow, black and striped bass and sauger.

Besides all the natural beauty, fishing and recreational opportunities these lakes create, they also have a very practical use and one of the jobs it performs is controlling floods on the Mississippi and Ohio and rivers. It is also a major TVA generating plant for hydroelectricity.

17 million recreation seekers visit this area annually, the majority of them vacationers and fishermen, as there is 2 400 miles of shoreline, this is hardly surprising. There are 92 commercial recreation areas, 48 public access areas, boat docks, resorts, wildlife management areas, national wildlife refuges, country parks, municipal parks, group camps, state parks and clubs surrounding these 2 400 miles of shoreline.
